  General Info
Les Volets Bleus, situated in Burgundian farming country, has been newly renovated with great care and respect for the environment, with heating and cooling provided geothermally and hot water by solar panels. The heated south-facing pool is directly across the courtyard from the house, both of which have wonderful views. The house is half way between Cluny and Charolles, just off the D17 Route Touristique, providing easy access to both historic towns and their markets. The area is famous for the Abbey in Cluny and its surrounding Romanesque churches. Many a pleasant hour can be spent by the pool drinking the wine you have bought directly from the local vignerons! There are also many birds to watch, especially the buzzards with their distinctive mewing cries, and because we are well away from light pollution the skies are excellent for star gazing.
Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation
Les Volets Bleus is set in quiet countryside with rolling hills, fields with beef cattle, woodlands and vineyards. There are good walking routes, places to visit and a range of excellent restaurants. You can choose from good simple French cooking to Michelin starred cuisine. There is plenty to interest wine buffs throughout the year, from the vendange in late August/September and portes ouvertes in November to the Beajolais nouveau and the Beaune wine auctions. Of course you can ’faire les degustation’ at any time! In southern Burgundy we have well defined seasons, and find we can usually swim from mid May to mid October. The summer can be very hot and the winters quite chilly! Spring is warm with a variety of fresh green colours over the countryside speckled with a white lace of wild cherry and blackthorn.

Interior Details Being stone built, the interior of Les Volets Bleus (90 sq metres) is beautifully cool in summer. The oak flooring and terracotta tiling are both practical and traditional. The well-equipped kitchen is a cook's delight where you can prepare Charollais beef, Bresse chickens or your own barbecue food, and there is a dishwasher for afterwards. The beamed salon is a light and spacious room with comfortable seating in which to eat and relax. Free WiFi is provided and there is a television with English programming, a DVD player and a CD player, as well as books, games and puzzles. Both bedrooms have retained their A frame beams and have large modern en-suite shower rooms. The larger room has a super king sized bed and the other has twin single beds. There is heating (or cooling in the summer) in both bedrooms and under floor heating in the kitchen and salon. Facilities include an espresso machine, microwave, washing machine, tumble drier, and hairdryer. There is also a downstairs WC.
Exterior Facilities BBQ / Courtyard / Garden / Parking / Swimming Pool
Exterior Details Les Volets Bleus is directly across the courtyard from the south-facing heated swimming pool. The pool has a uniform depth of 1.5m and can be lit in the evening. There is a gas barbecue, tables and chairs under a pergola, and pool loungers and parasols, where you can relax and enjoy the view. There is ample parking space and a grassed area for playing games. The pool is shared with the Main House.
Further Details We are ideally situated for days out or lazing round the pool. For days out you can choose between visiting museums, arts and crafts exhibitions, wandering around archaeological sites, châteaux and Romanesque churches or simply sampling the local produce. If you take a day trip to Lyon, the home of French cuisine, don’t forget to wander around Les Halles Bocuse, market halls full of produce at which to marvel. Mâcon, our departmental town, is half an hour away, surrounded by its famous vineyards, the home of Chardonnay and the world-renowned Puilly-Fuisse wines. We can recommend a personal guide to the vineyards to the North around Beaune and offer our own recommendations of the vignerons in the Mâconnais and Beaujolais. In the 11th century Cluny was the largest abbey after the Vatican and was a centre of power and wealth for the area. Tournus with its Abbey of St Philibert and boat trips on the River Saône, Beaune with its famous Hospice and Dijon, the ancient capital of Burgundy and the seat of its Dukes are all interesting places to visit. The French poet and politician Alphonse de Lamartine was a native of this area and there are châteaux at St Point and Pierreclos, which are associated with him and open to the public. There are many other chateaux in the area including Cormatin, Berzé le Châtel and Drée. We have our own vegetables, herbs and eggs available in season and supper can be provided for you on the evening of your arrival by prior arrangement. There are two mountain bikes available for use on the green lanes which surround the property. Dompierre-les-Ormes, our nearest village, is 12 minutes' drive and has a boulanger who won the world champion baguette competition in 2009, a small supermarket, a butcher/traiteur, a post office and banks. Cluny, with its artisan pâtisseries, restaurants and supermarkets is a 20 minute drive. Les Volets Bleus is totally independent from the Main House, but we are available for advice on places to visit, or if you need any help.

What visitors have said about Les Volets Bleus
It’s hard to imagine a better view or a warmer welcome than you’ll find “at Les Volets Bleus” with Jane and Jim. We particularly enjoyed waking up to the amazing view over the neighbouring villages and countryside. The quiet location is just far enough from the route touristique yet still close to Cluny and the South Burgundy vineyards. Every detail has been thought out from the beautifully handmade kitchen (Jim made it himself!) to the comfortable beds and cosy furnishings - not to mention the stunning pool that overlooks the fantastic view. If you get the chance to sample Jane’s cooking, don’t miss it, or the chance to enjoy a perfect holiday in this lovely setting.
