'La Croix' nestles against the top of a ridge amongst rolling Dordogne countryside with commanding views all around. It is a peaceful backwater within a tiny hamlet. The garden has many secluded corners and is full of buddleia, evening primrose, hollyhocks and many other shrubs and plants. We offer breakfast and evening meals if required prepared with locally sourced and home grown organic vegetables. |

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation |
|
| |
La Croix stands in rolling Dordogne countryside, criss-crossed with a maze of lanes through woodland and open farmland containing many small hamlets and villages. The picturesque and historical Aubeterre with its pretty tree-lined square where there is a Sunday market is 15 minutes drive away. It has a vast monolithic church. An extensive river beach has been created on the bend of the Dronne below the village. Aubeterre is one of 'Les beaux villages de France'. Perigueux is the capital of the Dordogne region. The medieval part of the town comes alive on Wednesdays and Saturdays when local artisans display their first class produce, including cured meats, truffles, foie-gras and pies or 'pates de Perigueux'. La Cite, once a pivotal Gallo-Roman site of Versunna, is also worth a foray. Angouleme, a cathedral city, used to be dominated by paper mills but now has a thriving tourist industry. The old town occupies a steep sided plateau overlooking a bend in the River Charente. |

Exterior Details |
Extensive lawns at 'La Croix' allow for many secluded shady or sunny corners all around the farmhouse. The front lawn is cosy and intimate, opening out down the side to the lower terraced lawn. This in turn overlooks our paddocks and a copse in the valley where the nightingale sings in the springtime and deer can frequently be seen grazing in the adjacent fields. Kites, harriers and buzzards frequently circle over the landscape. Our vegetable garden steps down below the terrace and in high summer the fields are a patchwork of sunflower and corn fields. In autumn the chalky soil creates a rich variety of whites and greys on the land - an artist's paradise.

What visitors have said about La Croix |

I just wanted to thank you again for our lovely stay in your farmhouse. I wanted you to know that we noticed all the little things you had done, the fresh flowers, the potpourri, the lavender bath wash and the beautiful bedlinen, not to mention the delicious meal you prepared. It all made for a wonderful experience that we will remember for ever. The evenings on the deck provided some of the most beautiful vistas we experienced in our 3 weeks in France. Warmest regards, Bryce.

I stayed at the farmhouse for a weekend retreat and it was just idyllic. I would totally recommend this beautiful farmhouse for its location, tranquility, space, comfort and charm. Sara was a lovely host who made us feel very welcome indeed and the meal that was arranged for us was just perfect. Very private and a special place to relax, unwind and get away from it all.

Le Croix is, without a doubt, a magical place!
We stayed there for a week last October and the only unfortunate thing was the weather! This is a place to really enjoy in the sunshine where you can potter around the slightly shambolic but delightful garden and fall into one of the many seats dotted around, or sit on the wooden balcony, and soak up the peace and spectacular landscape. The house is a lovely eccentric mixture of the kind of creative charm that you might find in Country Living mgazine put together by a young artist and with enough personal details to make you feel 'at home' rather than in a 'holiday let'.
The countryside around is stunning with rolling fields and a great open landscape. Aubeterre is an enchanting small village nearby that caters well for visitors with cafes and restaurants. Don't miss the amazing monolithic church hewn from a single block of rock. It is spectacular!
