More about your Aquitaine/Dordogne holiday...
Aquitaine is found in the south-west corner of France. It composed of five districts which include the well known and popular holiday rentals district of the Dordogne. It reaches Spain at its southern frontier, and the Atlantic Ocean runs along the western edge of the region. The extended Midi-Pyrenees region is found to the east. For those in search of Dordogne gites and holiday rentals the region falls into two distinct regions - the coasts and forest along the western edge, and the Dordogne region further inland. The beautiful and long Atlantic coastline, is backed by the enormous forests of the Landes region, and the Dune de Pilat (the largest sand dune in Europe which tops 104 metres and gives you unparalleled ocean and forest views).
Holiday rentals and Dordogne gites along the coast abound – from cottages and gites hidden in the forests to beachfront villas; you can even try a holiday in a yurt if you're feeling adventurous. This part of France is a real haven for sun seekers and nature lovers; as far as its beaches go, Aquitaine has been carefully safeguarded in order to avoid excessive urbanization. Besides its excellent surfing conditions, the coastal zone offers chains of ponds that are true ornithological reserves. Aquitaine’s majestic mountains which form a natural border with Spain are unique and well preserved. For the adrenalin junkies, Bearn, in the west, is divided between high peaks and verdant valleys. You can find Dordogne gites hidden away in these mountains and here one can practice sports as varied as hang gliding, paragliding, dirt biking, mountain-biking and summer hiking. You can go rafting and canyoning on the rivers, and in winter this mountain range is home to some charming ski resorts and an extensive range of holiday rentals and Dordogne gites.
