Straw Bale Cabin |
Howden, Yorkshire, England |
|
| |
| |
One-off feature |
|
| |
A unique holiday experience! The cosy, Straw Bale Cabin stands in the corner of a wildflower meadow, alongside a delightful pond over which swallows dip and dive the whole summer through. Amazing! Although only completed in 2007, the curvy, clay plastered walls, oak beams and deep, oak windowsills give the cabin the feel of an old country cottage. |

General Info |
|
| |
The Straw Bale Cabin is the perfect escape to the countryside; peaceful, relaxing and environmentally friendly. It is unique in that it is the first “mobile” straw bale building in the world (as far as we know!) and the UK’s first holiday home made from straw bales. This is sustainable tourism at its best! Natural buildings in a rural setting, renewable energy, local food, organic towels and a whole host of eco features. What better way to unwind? Simply relax in the natural surroundings or explore the quiet lanes and paths on foot or with the bicycles that we provide for guests to use. |

The Straw Bale Cabin at Village Farm, Brind is 3 miles from Howden by road. Alternatively, it is a pleasant 2 mile cross country walk which takes about 40 minutes at a leisurely pace. Howden is a quiet, attractive market town with great charm and warm hospitality. It has something to interest everyone. Howden had a fascinating past. There are interesting tales of pilgrims and bishops, horse fairs and airships. The Market Place and Bridge Gate are home to a wealth of small friendly shops; fresh fruit and vegetables at Annie’s, bread and cakes at Fuller’s or Atkinson’s and meat from the comical Mr Parkin or Mr Featherstone. There is also a cheese shop, off licence, chemist, post office, newsagent and a Co-op which opens long hours. Plenty to see and do on day trips into Hull, York or Leeds. Discover the lovely historic market town of Howden, only 3 miles away. Friendly family run shops and restaurants, inspiring architecture and live arts. |

Further Details |
The Straw Bale Cabin has a very special feel. Everyone remarks upon it. Perhaps it is the natural materials used throughout, the care and attention to detail, or the fact that it is handmade especially for you.
It is wonderfully warm and cosy in the winter months. The sun pours in during the day to heat the Cabin for free. Small electric radiators quickly warm the Cabin on cold nights and the wide super insulated walls retain the warmth for a long time. In the summer, when the sun is high in the sky, the south facing porch keeps it out of the Cabin and it stays refreshingly cool inside. The double height ceilings inside the Straw Bale Cabin also helps to keep it naturally cool inside, as well as providing a wonderful feeling of space. Construction of the Cabin commenced in late June 2006. The walls were built with locally grown wheat straw in just five days. Over the next four months we put on a roof, fixed in the windows and protected the walls with lime render (outside) and clay plaster (inside).
During the winter months we worked hard to complete the interior and The Straw Bale Cabin was ready to welcome its first visitors in Spring 2007. Please note - a sofa bed can be provided for a third guest or there is lots space to pitch a tent close by.

Warm as toast during this very cold snap. A thoroughly inspiring stay - the resource centre/library consumed much time when not walking around this lovely area.

What a lovely cabin – we have had a great time visiting all the surrounding towns and chilling out for long periods in between. The big skies at night have been a big hit and we loved the inclusion of games and jigsaws and pots of jam in the honesty shop!
