Further Details |
Originally a working barge under sail, then converted to motor and sail probably in the 1920's/30's, TG has always had to earn her living. Nowadays, these barges are kept in Northern Holland by villages that race against each other. We feel its important to preserve the working history of this old girl, so we have deliberately avoided over restoring the hull - you'll see her etched trading marks, and some lumps and bumps (battle scars!) on the hull. Twee Gebroeders (T.G. to her friends) is an iron sailing trading barge or 'Skutsje' built in Northern Holland in 1897. She spent her working life carrying cargo on the narrower canals of Friesland, probably cattle feed and coal (How glamourous!)
She was built without accommodation, and had a crew of 2. These boats were often company owned, and the skipper a freelancer. According to tradition, the brass barrel on the tiller shows she has been bought and paid for - and if the boat is for sale, a sheaf of corn would be placed in the flag holder!

What visitors have said about Twee Gebroeders |
| |
| |
“Thank you so much for a wonderful few days. We have enjoyed long walks, long swims and long dinners at the Waveney Inn. We have been amazed at the standard of finish on the barge and the attention to the smallest detail. You have both worked so hard to achieve, what must have seemed at times, like a daunting project and wondered whether your dream would come to fruition. Well done, it certainly has.”
Del and Thalia, Suffolk
|
“We have stayed on boats all over the world but none compares to this amazing barge. You have transformed her into total comfort and luxury”
Mr and Mrs Bartington, Hertfordshire, Aug 2010
|
The barge is stunning. Our children have been able to enjoy all the outdoor pursuits and we have all relished living aboard. For a family of deep city dwellers to experience this was refreshing and frankly important. We would love the opportunity to do this again.
