Want to rent a castle for your next holiday?! This civil weddings and short breaks holiday venue in Devon is perched high on Haldon Hill and stands in 5 acres of woodland in the heart of the lovely Devonshire countryside some 6 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter. From its vantage-point, panoramic views extending to Dartmoor, Exmoor, the South Hams, the River Exe valley and its estuary can be seen. On a really clear day, the Isles of Purbeck and Portland Bill in Dorset are visible. Haldon Belvedere, also known as Lawrence Castle, is a Grade II* listed triangular tower, originally built in 1788 by Sir Robert Palk as the centre piece to his vast estates and dedicated to the memory of Major-General Stringer Lawrence the founder of the Indian army. Devon Historic Buildings Trust renovated the tower in 1994 and is ensuring its future by opening it to the public and providing a unique and very popular venue for Civil Ceremonies, corporate functions and meetings. |

Exterior Details |
The 360º views at this level are truly stunning but can’t match those from the roof terrace where guests have unrestricted access to during their stay. The grounds are currently undergoing a programme of landscape management of the ground flora, the prime objective being to remove the non-native, invasive shrub, rhododendron ponticum. The aim is to restore the grounds to a woodland of indigenous specie. The trustees of the Devon Historic Buildings Trust are implementing a management plan, commissioned for them by the Devon Wildlife Trust, which is being part funded by a Forestry Commission English Woodland regeneration grant.

What visitors have said about Haldon Belvedere - Lawrence Castle |
| |
| |
In what I write I must reference the last time we stayed and the last visitors book which we read from cover to cover and cried, so beautiful were the things people had written. It is hard to express in words what a wonderfully magical start to our married life this gave us, summer under the stars and this time touching the clouds of mist as the rains rolled in. I hope this next adventure for us brings us back here with an addition to our family, and thanks to all for looking such a gem of a place. We'll see it again for sure!

We flew all the way from Canada to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary (at the venue for our marriage) and were blessed with stunning weather the whole time. The place is as spectacular as ever. We felt quite giddy being here and witnessing these breathtaking views all around. We didn't venture very far as this place is just too beautiful to leave. We are sad to have to leave it. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay!!

There are not enough words to describe how amazing our time here has been. All I can say is that I feel privileged to have stayed in this beautiful place with my amazing wife for the last few days. Even through the fog, this place takes your breath away. We will be back. Thanks for the memories.

Our almost wedding anniversary and my 4th visit, the first two having been with my sister Michele. This feels like my second home and never losses its magic. What views and what a beautifully kept flat: spotless and as cosy as ever. This tower which was spooky and grey in my childhood, is now fairy-like magical and white. Reading through the other comments, I think this visitors book should be named "The Book of Delights".

Quite possibly the nicest place I have ever stayed! Incredibly romantic, gorgeous rooms and grounds and loads to do in the area. Thoroughly enjoyed the silence, views, peace and sensational company! We're sure to return. Danny.
I wholeheartedly agree and hope my lovely husband keeps his promise! Carly

Thank you for making our wedding day run so smoothly and professionally. We were very touched to come back to roses on our bed. This is such a beautiful spot that it is so loved and appreciated by those who care for and visit it. A fantastic start to our married life.
