General Info |
|
| |
Neuhaus Castle was built in the 14th century by the counts of Stubenberg, one of the oldest and most renowned nobel families of Styria. It forms part of the line of fortifications erected along the eastern border of Austria to protect the region against invading Hungarians and Turks; however, there are no reports that the castle was ever besieged or taken. Other families followed, such as the Draxlers and Wurmbrands. The exceptional location of the building on top of a mountain offers a bird’s-eye view over Lake Stubenberg and the rolling country-side bejond, a view only shared by a faithful couple of falcons and a large family of black martins. A guided tour of the premises is offered free of charge. |

Further Details |
Bernhard Draxler undertook some major restorations after the castle had been damaged by fire in 1541; the main entrance gate with his coat of arms bear witness to these works. Around 1680, on the eve of the Ottoman wars, the Wurmbrands added a 100 ft. high shield-wall giving the castle its present characteristic appearance. Only a century later, they abandoned Neuhaus and moved to their newly built residence in the baroque castle of Schielleiten nearby. In 1800, lightening set fire to the roof reducing the once prominent fortress to a romantic ruin.
Reconstruction began in 1982 with the purpose of creating a residence for the present owners, Count and Countess Vetter von der Lilie, as well as to provide accommodation for tourists who want to rent a castle and prefer the unusual to designer hotels.
