La Gratitude has been the Pickstone family’s Hermanus holiday home for 90 years. Designed in 1916 and built on a property chosen for its magnificent views of Walker Bay and for its proximity to the vast Grotto Beach, La Gratitude is filled with a lifetime of memorable summer holidays in Hermanus. In splendid seclusion, La Gratitude is built on 3000sq metres of gently sloping grass rimmed by indigenous vegetation. It is a few steps from secluded coves, 12km of pristine beach, the Hermanus cliff paths and a short drive from the village. Its generous proportions provide ample accommodation for a maximum of 10 people. The interior is designed in the simple luxurious elegance of a by-gone age. |

Offering one of the most sublime, ceaseless views of Walker Bay and backed by the Olifantsberg, La Gratitude presents the perfect base to discover and explore an incredible variety of activities in and around Hermanus. Watch whales breach from La Gratitude's balcony, or walk along the Hermanus Cliff Path that begins in front of La Gratitude and follows the coast all the way into the village of Hermanus and beyond to Hermanus’ New Harbour, from where you can head out on a fishing trip. Head in the opposite direction and walk along kilometers of pristine beaches to the lagoon and beyond. There is paragliding off the Olifantberg, vineyard tours that include sampling of delectable South African wines, and shopping for art and crafts bargains in Market Square . The local area is an ornithologists dream with mountain, coastal, river and estuarine avian habitats. |

| Directions from Cape Town (Estimated time: 01h 15 ). Follow N2 from Cape Town for 61km over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Take the signed R43 left off ramp that leads right over the N2 for 34.5 km until Hermanus. Drive along Main Road following the Stanford signs through Hermanus Village until you reach cross the Mossel River and reach a large traffic circle/roundabout. Take turn straight across circle, follow 7th Avenue for 1.1 km. Turn right, follow 10th Avenue for 305 m. Turn left into 11th Street cul-de-sac. La Gratitude is the last house on the right. Covered distance: 123 km. |

The dining room and fully-equipped kitchen are merged and have access to the garden. The view from the dining table is of the expansive Walker Bay. The thoroughly modern kitchen is stocked with hob, oven, dishwasher, washing machine and two fridges. The living room has a large central fireplace and a modern entertainment system. Bedroom 1 has a king size bed and is on the sea side of the house. It shares a bathroom with Bedroom 4. Bedroom 4 is a twin with two entrances. At the rear, is the king size and ensuite Bedroom 2 which looks back onto the mountains, and towards the lagoon and the endless beach. Bedroom 3 is also ensuite and is a twin and looks out onto the pool deck. There is also accommodation in two upstairs inter-leading bedrooms with twin beds. These are reached from the kitchen. The accommodation in the upstairs suite has its own entertainment section.

As the first house built on this stretch of the coast in South Africa, La Gratitude remains the closest house to Hermanus’ most popular and largest beach, Grotto Beach. Wonderfully private in large grounds bordered on two sides by protected fynbos, La Gratitude has arguably the best location in Hermanus with its proximity to the beaches, cliff path and views. A delightful suntrap, the protected courtyard offers the ideal private location to either dine al fresco or suntan out of the wind. It also is a secure storage and drying area for surfboards, windsurfers, paragliders, beach towels, etc. Combining the most modern luxurious facilities with a panoramic view of Walker Bay, La Gratitude's fenced outside entertainment area includes a multi-jet, multi-functional Jacuzzi (all the better to enjoy the sunset spectaculars from), a child friendly pool, a 12-seater garden dining area and a built-in braai. Known as the Riviera of the Cape, Hermanus is 123kms (a hour and a quarter’s drive) from the centre of Cape Town. It is situated in an idyllic setting in South Africa on the coast of the Western Cape region known as the Overberg. Rich in history and agricultural abundance the drive from Cape Town is almost as beautiful as the destination. The town of Hermanus was established because it was such an ideal holiday spot over 100 years ago. Today it has a bigger infrastructure and hosts of activities and adventures but still holds all the magic that a seaside holiday destination should. The restaurants are superb, and there are lots of local vineyards where you can sample the local wines. Hermanus is home to the Hermanus Wine Village which stocks the largest collection of South African wine in Southern Africa. Whale watching - from July to November the Southern Right Whale may be seen breaching and playing in the sea, just off-shore. These sights have earned Hermanus the reputation of the best land-based whale watching in the world. The most frequently whales spotted in the Walker Bay area is the Southern Right Whale, but Humpbacks, Bryde’s and the occasional Killer Whale has also been spotted. The whales start arriving in May in order to calve and to mate in the shallow water. Peak time for whales at any one time is October, but many can still be seen in November, tailing off in December. Whale Crier - Hermanus has the world’s only Whale Crier who sounds his kelp horn to announce where whales have been sighted.

A daily maid service is included. There is a 2 week minimum booking over Easter and 3 weeks over Christmas or New Year, although other requests will be considered. There is a 2 day minimum booking period at all other times. Non refundable 50% deposit required to confirm vacation rentals over Christmas and New year. For the rest of the year a 50% deposit is required to make a booking. Full payment must be made 2 weeks before booking date. NO SHOWS AND CANCELLATIONS WITHIN 48HRS WILL BE CHARGED THE FULL RATE. CANCELLATIONS WITHIN 7 DAYS WILL BE CHARGED 50%. Any extra service you require can be provided by prior arrangement e.g. Chef, au-pair / nanny, tour guide. An extra fee will be charged should these be provided.
