Dar 91 is a funky, airy and light two-bedroom house. Set over three floors, it has two roof terraces with panoramic views and has French windows overlooking characterful Rue Chbanat. It's the perfect place to relax and soak up the authentic atmosphere of the old town.
The main bedroom and its bathroom are on the first floor; the living room, kitchen and dining area occupy the second; and a further bedroom and bathroom make up the third floor – which also has a small terrace. From here, wooden stairs lead up to a large terrace with uninterrupted views across the medina and to the sea.
Unlike many Moroccan properties let out to tourists, Dar 91 does not feature a central courtyard - which can be a big advantage if you value your privacy, as you won't be sharing the house or roof terraces with other guests.
Situated in a district of the medina unspoilt by tourism, we let the two-bedroom house as a whole rather than 'by the room', with breakfast and daily maid service.

Details on the area surrounding the property/accommodation |

According to Unesco, Essaouira is an "exceptional" example of a late-18th-century fortified town, built according to the principles of contemporary European military architecture in a North African context.
It's also a really cool place to hang around in, strolling through the souks, sipping mint tea in the many pavement cafes, and watching the world go by. |

Interior Details |
In our renovation we have rejected the aspirational, ‘faux palace’ look favoured by many European riad owners, in favour of simplicity. We prefer more pared-down interiors, and in a country where hot running water is a distant dream for many, rose petal strewn fountains feel, in any case, like a luxury too far.
Our aim has been to create a ‘home from home’ for ourselves, our friends and family – and for you to enjoy. Our bedrooms are all ensuite, and there’s a small kitchen, a cosy living room and two roof terraces.
We’ve furnished the house using mainly reclaimed, fixed-up furniture, combining traditional and modern objects within a clean, contemporary aesthetic. We have focused particularly on interesting lighting combinations. Guests often describe Dar 91 as quirky, and often delight in the little details: hand-embroidered sheets, old-fashioned wool blankets, thick towels and hot water bottles, for example.

Further Details |
We are extremely aware of the social and economic challenges faced by the people of Essaouira and its rural hinterland. We give a minimum of 10% of our profits to local causes we believe in. We focus particularly on: Sponsoring children through school, especially in the most remote rural areas where often the logistics and costs of getting to and from school are enough to dissuade families from allowing their children to complete their education. Helping families in need with the cost of schoolbooks and uniforms to assist them in keeping their children at school. One-off hardship payments to help widows and divorced women. Micro-loans to help individuals start their own small income-generating ventures. Supporting our neighbours’ health by paying doctors’ and dentists’ fees where we feel it is necessary
We also invite our guests to bring any unwanted clothes (all shapes and sizes), toys, pencils, pens, exercise books.

What visitors have said about Dar 91 Essaouira |

I came across Dar 91 four years ago and have been back several times. As an artist, I just can't resist. The house is on a friendly little street inside the walls of the medina, which also has an ancient bakery for delicious fresh baguettes. The house itself is full of quirky, eclectic touches that make it feel like home and the secluded roof terrace is perfect for chilling out. Literally a stroll away from Essaouira's vast, beautiful beach, Dar 91 is a real treasure that I recommend to all of my friends. With the best care and welcome from Paolo, the owner and Naima, the amazing housekeeper too.

Beautifully renovated and decorated. Roomy, comfortable and well equipped. There are terraces for relaxing. Niama will look after you very well. The house is close to the shops and eateries. To top it all, a share of profits from your rent will go directly to people in need in the town and surrounding area, and what lovely, welcoming people they are!

Arrived a few days ago, descending from the heat of Marrakesh into a real pea-souper of a fog! We were relieved to find Essaouira smells of donkey piss less than other Moroccan cities, and when the fog cleared the next morning, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the medina, port and beach….As architects we are very impressed by what a lovely job you have done with the house, and have very much enjoyed staying here. Thanks to you and Naima for a lovely time

Last day of a wonderful 14 day stay in Essaouira and Dar 91. A big thank you to Jeremy, Paolo and Naima for making our stay such a fab one. The house is fab and quirky and was a great place to relax. It was great to fling the windows open and listen to the kids playing on the street, the horse coming home to bed every evening, the detergent man with his hooter in the morning, and the bobbin winding machines. Loved loved loved Essaouira

Excellent, quirky, very authentic location, being in the poorer part of town. Fascinated by the bakery up the road and workshops. Beds very comfy. Naima very dedicated. Went for a baking lesson at the women’s cooperative, which was good fun and a little peek into another walk of life. The holiday was good value and also just right for us to expose the kids to something totally different - did the camel riding at Diabat and quads which was the kids’ highlight.
